Shapan, kamzol tailoring tradition

Chapan is the national clothing of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Chapan was sewn depending on the season, from thin or thick material, and insulated with fur or cotton wool. The lining was sewn from thin materials - silk, cotton fabric. Sometimes they sewed a double elongated lining. In addition to the shepherd's chapan, the men's chapan had a stand-up collar, while the women's chapan had a turn-down collar. There are several types of chapan - quilted - “syrmalyshalan”, “kaptalshapan” (with additional lining on the sleeve), “kimalyshapan” fitted. The fitted “kimalyshapan” is designed for girls and young women, the cut is sewn in the form of a colorful fabric, with patterns on the collar, sleeves, hem.. Instead of a button, a silver clasp (hook) with precious stones is sewn on. Currently, under the name “shanaidar,” a chapan with sleeves embroidered or decorated with jewelry is sewn. There is a widespread tradition among people of bringing chapan as a gift to honorable people. Kamzol is a national clothing, widespread among the Kazakh people since the 18th-19th cc. Information about the kamzolcan be found from the middle of the 19th century. The kamzol is found not only among the Kazakhs, but also among other Turkic peoples. The kamzol occupies a special place in women's clothing; it performs both warming and decorative functions. Kamzol are light, sleeveless, lined summer clothing. The skirts and collars of the kamzol are decorated with stones, silver coins “solkebai” and other pendant decorations.
